The third LTTA of the RAIN project took place in Italy in two stages. In Milan (17–19 May), host CBM Italia ETS — together with CeDisMa (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore) — led sessions on disability-inclusive disaster risk reduction. The delegations then travelled to Sicily, where the Istituto Comprensivo «Federico II di Svevia» in Mascalucia (19–22 May) hosted training activities, institutional visits and field experiences on natural risk prevention, volunteering and community resilience.
Key Programme Highlights
Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction
Sessions at the CBM Italia office — including a multisensory «Tactile Portrait» workshop — and the conference «Crisis Management and Natural Disasters: centrality of persons with disabilities» at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan.
Earthquake Drill & School Emergency Plan
A large-scale earthquake drill simulation at I.C.S. «Federico II di Svevia», followed by a comparative analysis of the school emergency handbook and of practices adopted across the partner countries.
Institutional & Scientific Visits
Visits to the Regional Department of the Italian Civil Protection (San Giovanni La Punta) on intervention protocols and coordination, and to INGV in Nicolosi, where volcanologist Boris Behncke presented the evolution of Mount Etna.
Nature-Based Solutions for Flood Risk
Seminar at Di3A — University of Catania on «Nature Based Solutions for Urban Flood Risk Mitigation: Case Studies from Catania», with a technical visit to the «Green Roof» green-infrastructure project.
Mount Etna Walk & Closing Ceremony
An educational walk on Mount Etna guided by CNSAS Alpine Rescue volunteers — concluding the school’s «Safe in the Mountain» project — followed by the coordination meeting and the official certificate-awarding ceremony.
Weekly Programme
Travelling day — all participants arrive in Milan.
Presentation of CBM Italia and CeDisMa; coordination point on the final months of the project; «Tactile Portrait» multisensory workshop; afternoon conference «Crisis Management and Natural Disasters: centrality of persons with disabilities» at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, closing with a networking aperitif.
Guided tour of the Milan city centre; negotiation activity and review of the RAIN e-book and website; onward travel to Catania and welcome of the delegations in Mascalucia.
Institutional visit to I.C.S. «Federico II di Svevia» with a welcome by Principal Benedetta Gennaro; earthquake drill simulation; analysis of the school emergency handbook; visits to the Regional Department of the Civil Protection (San Giovanni La Punta) and to INGV in Nicolosi.
Seminar at Di3A — University of Catania: «Nature Based Solutions for Urban Flood Risk Mitigation: Case Studies from Catania»; technical visit to the «Green Roof»; visit to the city centre.
Educational walk from Rifugio Sapienza (1,910 m) to the 2001 eruptive vents with students and CNSAS Alpine Rescue volunteers; coordination meeting on the final project months; attendance certificate ceremony and LTTA closing.
